NFA stands for National Firearms Act. In firearm shopping, the name brings together several product types under a legal classification rather than describing one particular style. Understanding those product names is a useful first step toward navigating the category.

Three Product Types You'll Encounter

Suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and short-barreled shotguns are among the products associated with the NFA, though the Act includes other classifications as well. Each serves a different function within the category.

  • Suppressors: Also commonly called silencers, these devices reduce the sound of gunfire. They do not eliminate it, and hearing protection remains important.

  • Short-barreled rifles: Often abbreviated SBRs, these are rifles with dimensions that place them within the applicable short-barreled firearm classification.

  • Short-barreled shotguns: Often abbreviated SBSs, these are shotguns distinguished by their dimensions and legal classification.

A suppressor is a sound-reduction device; an SBR or SBS describes a firearm configuration. These terms answer different questions about a product. Compact appearance alone does not establish how a firearm is classified.
